Is it really that bad? I am sorry to hear that you were rejected visa even to come and pick your another visa. That is really weird. Because I recently applied for a visa to the first world country from Dubai where I am working and studying and i got it in 7 working days. I guess it is all matter of who is processing your visa and stuff, some people can really have closed minds. However, the restriction being put on Nepalese women to travel to middle east, i see is totally lame.

If we get better opportunity here like in any other country, what it the harm in letting us work? Remittance is the second largest source of our national income is not it? Yes there have been cases of sex workers and escorts and abuse. However this was because the women were put into places of work where they were not able to voice their opinions, practice their rights. Instead of putting restrictions for women to travel, I think the government should rather form a proper evaulation procedure to check the status of employment, the skill level of the women leaving the country. The whole business of foreign employment has it's darker side. But if we could streamline it, reduce the corruption, the fake papers and fake visas, Nepal could only benefit by it.

I have been living, working and doing weekend degree course. I have been living here for past four years and i have come across so many inspiring Nepalese women. All of them in respectable jobs, respectable life, family etc. People need to educate themselves and change their attitude about 'Gulf Countries' after all the two top economic growth has been in KSA and UAE this year. It is land of opportunity, if we can use it wisely.

Stick around with what you have. This "dai", "didi", "tapai", "hajur" thing is too complicated. Respect doesn't have to be defined this way. calling someone by their can be equally respectful or more sometimes. I am fed up with these so-called terms of respect, lot of times it results in dis-respect. An example, I was with two friends the other day, one was nepali (older), other one was not (younger). We were discussing some topic and this nepali guy got offended that the other guy who looked younger than him was being witty. He ended up asking "how old are you?" and saying "i am like your older brother and you should respect me." the other guy was cool to not get offended and no further arguments happened. But you see where this can lead to.

Btw, it will be equally confusing to find out who to tell dai, or bhai or uncle or whatever. calling everyone by their name and addressing them as "you" is much simpler and respectful. this is coming from a nepali guy.

@nepaliketi, Thanks. Looks like Ratna Pustak Bhandar may have that book.

But currently reading Baburam Acharya's Shree 5 Prithvi Narayan Shah ko Sankchipta Jivani and it is a fantastic read. It gives you a glimpse of Nepal that existed 300 years go.

Brilliant piece- saw it in today's Republica and loved reading. Very true about how our backpacker guests love to insult us by dressing up in rags. Worst, they even dump those rags locally (in 'donations') before they leave.

Hey, did you close your twitter account? Haven't seen you there for ages.
